Volkswagen . How to Change a Thermostat in a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8The thermostat on the 4.7-liter V8 in the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee provides coolant temperature data to the engine. On the 4.7, the thermostat is mounted at the bottom of the block and connects to the lower radiator hose. Replacement of the thermostat is not unusual due to age and use. A mechanically adept motorist can perform this messy repair. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Comprehensive set of hand tools including wrenches and socket Flat-head screwdriver Allen wrench Socket extension Channel lock pliers Replacement thermostat kit with gasket Bucket Rags and towels Hydraulic jack Jack stands Step by Step : 1 Drain the coolant from the system to allow for the thermostat replacement. Start by opening the top on the coolant reservoir. Locate the petcock on the bottom of the radiator and open it to drain the coolant into a bucket. Once you see the coolant reservoir has drained down, remove the radiator cap on the top of the radiator with an Allen wrench. 2 Remove the splash shield. Remove the lower radiator hose. The thermostat on the 4.7-liter V8 connects to the lower radiator hose, which requires removal to permit access. Be sure to have the bucket available, since coolant will flow from the hose when removed. Once removed, the thermostat will be accessible. 3 Remove the 8 mm bolts holding the thermostat housing from the engine using a socket and extension. Using a flat-head screwdriver, gently pry the thermostat out. Expect yet more coolant upon removal. 4 Insert the replacement thermostat. There is a notch on the thermostat housing to assist in lining up the thermostat. Secure the thermostat housing to the block using the 8 mm bolts. 5 Reconnect the lower and upper radiator hoses. Reinstall the splash shield. Refill the coolant system and be sure to purge air from the system. Replace the radiator cap and close the reservoir tank cover. Tips & Warnings You may want to raise the Jeep with a hydraulic jack and jack stands for additional clearance under the vehicle. If the coolant in the Jeep has not been replaced in the last three years, it is a good time to flush the system and replace with fresh coolant. The 4.7L V8 requires a total of 14.5 qts. of coolant. Make sure the engine is cold and has not been run recently, as coolant gets extremely hot during normal operation. This warning applies to the radiator cap as well. Engine coolant is extremely dangerous if ingested and has a sweet taste that will attract animals, so be sure to clean up any spills and do not leave coolant sitting outside unattended. Volkswagen . How to Change the Thermostat on a 2000 Nissan MaximaAs with other vehicles, you need to replace the thermostat in the 2000 Nissan Maxima if your heater is on, yet no hot air comes into the passenger compartment or the car frequently runs hot. Fortunately, it's fairly easy to replace the thermostat, and doing the job yourself saves money. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Screwdriver Clean drain pan Gloves Pliers Gasket scraper Thermostat Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the negative battery cable. It's important that the negative battery cable is disconnected before you begin the repair so you don't get shocked. Use a screwdriver to pry off the cap protecting the cable and remove the cable from the battery post. Make sure the cable doesn't touch metal when you set it aside. 2 Drain the coolant. Place a clean drain pan under the radiator's drain plug and wear gloves to protect your hands. Then turn the plug counterclockwise so the liquid starts to drain. 3 Remove the upper radiator hose. Using pliers, loosen the clamp holding the upper radiator hose in place. Then, completely remove the hose from the engine. 4 Remove thermostat housing cover. Look at the position of the old thermostat and remove the two bolts holding the cover in place. Remove the cover and take out the old thermostat. Then, scrape the housing unit with a gasket scraper to remove any gasket residue stuck inside the housing unit. 5 Install new thermostat into the thermostat housing unit. When installing the new thermostat, make sure the springs are facing the engine. Then, replace thermostat housing cover, tighten the bolts and reattach the radiator hose. 6 Refill radiator. If you used a clean drain pan for the drained coolant, use a funnel and pour it back into the radiator. If the pan was not clean, use new coolant. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery post. Start the car and let it warm up. Check the radiator hose for any leaks. Once the engine is warm, turn on the heater to make sure it's blowing warm air. Tips & Warnings To avoid serious injuries or burns, never work on any part of the car's cooling system while the car is hot. You shouldn't have to pull or push the parking brake handle to the most extreme level to make the brake work. (As the cables loosen up, you have to pull the handle up higher to engage the brake.) You shouldn't be able to drive the vehicle with the parking brake on. If you can, the brake needs to be adjusted or repaired. To adjust your parking brake, do the following: 1. Jack up the car (a hoist would be lovely) and make sure that it's secure (see Chapter 1 for instructions). Be sure to leave your parking brake off. You can also slide underneath with a work light if you don't want to jack the car up. 2. Trace the thin steel cables that run from each of your rear wheels until they meet somewhere under the backseat of the car. Where they meet, there should be a device (usually a bar and a screw) that controls the tension. If changing the bulb or fuse doesn't work, get someone to check the connection between the warning light and the brake; there may be a short in it. Checking Anti-Lock Brakes Anti-lock brake systems (ABS) vary from one vehicle to another, and most require no special maintenance. (Chapter 10 tells you how ABS brake systems work and how to operate them properly.) Manufacturers install an amber warning lamp in the instrument panel. Under normal circumstances, the amber light will go on briefly during engine startup and turn off in a short amount of time. If it goes on while you're on the road, the ABS system isn't working properly and your vehicle is using only the normal brake system. In this case, get the ABS repaired as soon as you can. BEfj If you want to test the operation of your anti-lock brakes, find an empty parking lot on a rainy day. While traveling on a slippery surface at about 30 mph, firmly press the brake pedal. You should hear some clicking and feel some pulsing of the brake pedal while the vehicle comes to a stop without sliding. If the warning lamp stays on, or you suspect that the ABS isn't working properly, take your vehicle to a professional who specializes in brake systems. Well, that's it. If you get in the habit of checking your brake system every 10,000 miles (and more frequently as they wear), you'll be able to stop worry Volkswagen . Power door locks don't work on my 2002 CRV?
